Can we get a roar? The new moon in passionate, expressive Leo helps us find our authentic voices — and actually use them. Apparently, the US government is not done making an example of whistleblower Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning. Today, Manning’s lawyers revealed that their client is facing numerous “disciplinary” infractions and a hearing on Tuesday will decide whether she is sent to solitary confinement, possibly for the duration of her sentence.

Remembering Manning’s “Crime”

Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison in August of 2013 after being convicted of 20 different charges related to her leaking of classified information. Her leaks blew the whistle on a variety of bad acts committed by the military during the Iraq and Afghanistan war, including an incident where American soldiers opened fire on unarmed journalists from a helicopter. Additionally, she exposed that the estimated “civilian casualty” numbers being publicized by the US government was intentionally falsified to conceal just how many non-combatants our military had killed.

Okay, was just thinking out loud here about next year’s prez election. Kinda lookin’ at all the possibilities once the Dems’ and Repubs’ choose their respective nominees.

Offhand I firmly believe that the ’16 election will be like no other we’ve witnessed in history as far as the electorate goes. Why? Because the vast majority of Americans are pissed off at ‘Uncle Sam’ (i.e, the gov’t, albeit for different reasons).

It don’t matter if we’re libo, conservo, Dems, Repubs, Independents, Libertarians, etc. It don’t matter if we’re white, black, brown, purple, green, polka-dot, or a combo of ’em all. It don’t matter if we’re homos, lezzies, straight, bi, transgender, or a mix of ’em all. It don’t matter if we’re young, old, or middle age. It don’t matter if we’re Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, or just don’t give a shits’. One thing the vast majority of us agree on…

From feminism to veganism to everything in between, the beginning of the twenty-first century has seen some major social justice movements rise. Thanks to social media, places like Tumblr are ablaze with political discourse, ranging from so-called “radical” ideas for societal reform, to calls for moderation, to entire counter-movements. 

Some people criticize these movements for being too radical. For example, some oppose feminists who claim that we must radically change our lexicon and adopt different vocabularies because words we’ve been using for centuries are rooted in oppression. The classic example is changing “women” to “womyn.” Some people, who do agree that we still have a long way to go for women’s equality, argue that this is going too far, that we’re asking too much out of ordinary people if we want them to completely rethink their lifestyle.

Though transparency was a cause he championed when campaigning for the presidency, President Obama has largely avoided making certain defense costs known to the public. However, when it comes to military appropriations for government spy agencies, we know from Freedom of Information Act requests that the so-called “black budget” is an increasingly massive expenditure subsidized by American taxpayers. The CIA and and NSA alone garnered $52.6 billion in funding in 2013 while the Department of Defense black ops budget for secret military projects exceeds this number. It is estimated to be $58.7 billion for the fiscal year 2015.

What is the black budget? Officially, it is the military’s appropriations for “spy satellites, stealth bombers, next-missile-spotting radars, next-gen drones, and ultra-powerful eavesdropping gear.”

However, of greater interest to some may be the clandestine nature and full scope of the black budget, which, according to analyst Catherine Austin Fitts, goes far beyond…

“We’re not trying to get more officers indicted. We’re saying, ‘Whatever you decide, do it in the open'”

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Tuesday making California the first state in the nation to ban the use of grand juries to decide whether police officers should face criminal charges when they kill people in the line of duty.

The ban, which will go into effect next year, comes after grand juries in Ferguson, Missouri, and Staten Island, New York, made controversial decisions in secret hearings last year not to bring charges against officers who killed unarmed black men, sparking protests across the country. Calls for transparency also have come amid national concerns about disparate treatment of blacks and other racial minorities when encounters with cops turned deadly in Baltimore, Cincinnati and South Carolina.

“This month’s New Moon takes place in gold-hearted Leo. Astrologers typically describe Leo as extroverted, playful, and creative.

Calling Leo

Leo carries finger paints and a portable sandbox wherever he goes. He plays at everything, having never learned that life’s no fun.
